Domain 1 is all about the planning and preparation required to have a successful classroom. Teachers have to spend a lot of their time preparing resources, planning lessons, and then communicating the knowledge to every student.
Component 1A: Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy
What is it?- Teachers must have command of what they're teaching. They must be able to utilize all their knowledge in the classroom to relate the topic to the real world so their students understand.
Why is it important?- Teachers have to fully understand their subject because they must address common misconceptions their students might have. They must understand the internal relationships within their discipline so that they can put their best foot forward for their students.
Elements-
Knowledge of content and the structure of the discipline- Every specific discipline has a dominant structure and then smaller components, as well as central themes
Knowledge of prerequisite relationships- Some subjects have important prerequisites and teachers need to know and understand them so that they can teach them to their students with lessons and units.
Knowledge of content-related pedagogy- Some subjects have "signature pedagogies" that are evolved over time and proven to be most effective for teaching.
In my teaching career- In my teaching career, I will strive to understand all the content and important pedagogy for English. When my future students ask questions, I want to have an answer prepared and ready to explain.
Component 1B: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students
What is it?-Teachers don’t teach content abstractly; they teach to students. To ensure student learning, therefore, teachers must understand not only their subject content and its related pedagogy but the students to whom they teach that content. Teachers must acknowledge what recent research in cognitive psychology has confirmed: namely, that students learn through active intellectual engagement with content. While there are patterns in cognitive, social, and emotional developmental stages typical of different age groups, students learn in their individual ways and may come with gaps or misconceptions that the teacher needs to uncover in order to plan appropriate learning activities.
Why is it important?- Students have lives beyond school, lives that include athletic and musical pursuits, activities in their neighborhoods, and family lives. Students whose first language is not English, as well as students with other special needs, must be considered when planning lessons and identifying resources that will ensure their understanding.
Elements-
Knowledge of child and adolescent development- Children learn differently at different stages of their lives.
Knowledge of the learning process- Learning requires active intellectual engagement.
Knowledge of students’ skills, knowledge, and language proficiency- Children’s lives beyond school influence their learning.
Knowledge of students’ interest and cultural heritage- Children’s backgrounds influence their learning.
Knowledge of students’ special needs- Children do not all develop in a typical fashion.
In my teaching career- When I teach I will make sure to get to know each and every one of my students and their needs in the classroom. Throughout the school year, I will make sure to adapt my teaching style for my students so that they will be able to fully grasp the content.
Component 1C: Setting Instructional Outcomes
What is it?- Establishing instructional outcomes involves finding specifically what students will be expected to learn; the outcomes describe what the students will learn not what they will do. The instructional outcomes should encompass important learning and must lend themselves to different forms of assessment so that all students are able to prove their understanding of the content.
Why is it important?- For example, it is vital for students to learn to read, but educators also hope that they will enjoy reading. Also, experienced teachers are able to connect their learning outcomes with others both within their discipline and in other disciplines.
Elements-
Value, sequence, and alignment- Students must be able to build their understanding of important ideas from concept to concept.
Clarity- Outcomes must refer to what students will learn, not what they will do, and must permit viable methods of assessment.
Balance Outcomes- should reflect different types of learning, such as knowledge, conceptual understanding, and thinking skills.
Suitability for diverse students- Outcomes must be appropriate for all students in the class
In my teaching career- I will make sure to vary my methods of assessment for each lesson so that my students will be able to accurately demonstrate their knowledge. Some students might be bad test takers, so I will make sure to implement projects, essays, homework, participation, etc. so that they don't get discouraged and actually enjoy their learning.
Component 1D: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources
What is it?- Teachers have to know all about which resources work for their subject and which ones work for their students too.
Why is it important?- Knowing resources is very important because it enhances student learning and helps students with learning content in a different way, not just lecture style teaching.
Elements-
Resources for classroom use- materials align with classroom learning
Resources to extend content knowledge and pedagogy- materials are available to further teachers' professional knowledge
Resources for students- materials are appropriately challenging
In my teaching career- I will make sure to use all the resources given to me and also find resources on my own to use for my students. Also, I will make sure that the resources I find are challenging and helpful to them.
Component 1E: Designing Coherent Instruction
What is it?- Teachers must instruct their students with the appropriate content and learning activities.
Why is it important?- It's important because when developing instruction, teachers have to take in to account that all students aren't the same. It is important for all the students to have a clear understanding and the skills needed for learning.
Elements-
Learning Activities- Instruction is designed to engage students and advance their learning through the content
Instructional materials and resources- Materials and resources are appropriate to the learning needs of the students
Instructional groups- Groups are intentionally organized to support student learning
Lesson and unit structure- Organization is clear and sequenced to advance students’ learning
In my teaching career- In the future I will make sure to make my instruction clear and concise so that all my students can understand.
Component 1F: Designing Student Assessments
What is it?- Good teaching requires assessment of learning, ensuring that teachers know that their students are leaning and assessment for learning, incorporating assessment directly into the lessons.
Why is it important?- It is important to know that the students are learning and are being assessed correctly. Also, it is important for the teachers to know how to assess and the reasons behind it.
Elements-
Congruence with instructional outcomes- Assessments must match learning expectations.
Criteria and standards- Expectations must be clearly defined.
Design of formative assessments- Assessments for learning must be planned as part of the instructional process.
In my teaching career- I will make sure to explain the ways I am going to assess my students to my students. That way they can be better prepared and know my expectations.
