Domain 3 is all about Instruction. It involves communicating with students, questioning and discussion techniques, engaging students in learning, using assessment in instruction, and flexibility and responsiveness.
Component 3A: Communicating with Students
What is Component 3A- For students to become engaged in learning, they must get clear directions and explanations that are audible and legible. This element focuses on what is happening in the classroom, not outside.
Why is it important?- It is crucial to communicate with students in a clear, focused way so that they can convey deep understanding of the lesson.
Elements-
Expectations for Learners- Teachers must communicate with students what they expect of them. It is important for students to have goals and expectations.
Directions and Procedures- Teachers are direct with the directions and do not always need to be supervised.
Explanations of Content- Good teachers use vivid language and examples to explain important lessons and content.
Use of oral and written language- The teachers advanced vocabulary encourages students to use similar vocabulary in their writing and speaking in class.
In my teaching career- In the future when I have my own students, I will clarify directions and use advanced vocabulary so my students have an example set for them. I will also explain directions and goals I will have for them.
Component 3B: Questioning and Discussion Techniques
What is it?- Questioning and discussion techniques are used as a means to strengthen student understanding. It is important that they are not just used as recitation or a verbal quiz. Good teachers use convergent and divergent question techniques and build upon student answers.
Why is it important?- It is important for class discussions to be animated to keep the students entertained. It is important to challenge previous questions and discussions.
Elements-
Quality of questions/prompts- Questions of high quality cause students to think and reflect, to deepen their understanding, and to test their ideas against those of their classmates. There must be sufficient time allotted for students to come up with a thoughtful response.
Discussion techniques- A true discussion is when a teacher poses a question and invites all students to share their thoughts and opinions on the topic.
Student participation- As teachers we want all students to participate. Some students tend to dominate discussion and teachers need to recognize how to incorporate the more shy students.
In my teaching career- When I am a teacher, I will make sure my discussions invite my students to argue and discuss the topic at hand. I will recognize the shy students and try to get them to participate more.
Component 3C: Engaging Students in Learning
What is it?- Component 3C is all about engaging students in learning and making them excited to learn new things.
Why is it important?- A lot of the time students are bored or can't relate to the subject being taught, but if the teacher works to really engage their students then the student who originally did not like the subject might change their mind and realize they are actually interested in it.
Elements-
Activities and Assignments- students should be able to choose to show what they know with differentiated instruction
Grouping of Students- students are placed into groups in a purposeful and meaningful manner. There could be potential issues if students don't like anyone in the group or if two people are best friends and might get too distracted
Instructional materials and resources- materials and resources must be suitable for our students' ages and ability levels
Structure and pacing- lessons must follow a logical sequence, leave room for students to reflect on the lesson
In my teaching career- I will make sure to make my classroom and lessons fun and interesting to keep my students engaged and involved with learning. I will put thought into how I group students and the instructional resources I will use.
Component 3D: Using Assessment in Instruction
What is it?- Assessment for learning has increasingly come to play a vital role in classroom practice , it it's important for teachers to know whether students have learned what was intended for them to learn.
Why is it important?- We must be able to assess our students to see if we can move on or things need to be clarified more.
Elements-
Assessment Criteria- Students need to know the criteria for the assessment. Ultimately, students should have a say in creating the criteria.
Monitoring of Student Learning- Teachers need to understand and have a grasp on which students are ahead and behind.
Feedback to Students- Students need to know their standing in the class so that they do not have anxiety or false stress over their grade.
Student self-assessment and monitoring of progress- Students must take responsibility for their learning and grades.
In my teaching career- I will make sure to hand back tests and papers in a timely fashion and make sure to give constant feedback to my students. They will also be partly responsible for assessing their own knowledge.
Component 3E: Flexibility and Responsiveness
What is it?- ability to be flexible during a lesson, adjust and adapt the lesson if it is not working
Why is it important?- It is important to adapt and learn as we go so that our students can receive the best instruction and experience.
Elements-
Lesson adjustment- Teachers must practice the skill of adjusting their lesson plans quickly if students aren't responding positively.
Response to students- If a teachable moment happens in class, a teacher must point it out and help their students grow from the experience.
Persistence- Teachers cannot give up! They must persist and continue even if it becomes hard and stressful.
In my own teaching career- When I become a teacher I will try my best at being flexible and responsive for my students. Also, I will try to remember to persist through the tough spots of teaching.
