I chose this informative webinar because I want to ensure a safe and loving environment for my students. Trauma is something that can be hard to identify in people and I want to be aware and careful of what I might say or do in my class so that I do not trigger any sensitive emotions. Especially for children, trauma is difficult to live with. I strive for my classroom to be a safe space where my students can confide in me and open up about what might be happening with them.
Takeaway #1- Trauma exposure and Trauma reaction are different but both important to recognize and understand. Trauma differs between everyone because two people can experience the same traumatic event, but have completely different reactions to what happened. Trauma is subjective not objective.
Takeaway #2- Traumas that are more likely for students to have are early loss are lack of consistent caregivers, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, domestic violence, various forms of neglect, war, medical and surgical procedures, and serious accidents.
Takeaway #3- Trauma affects kids social emotional development, cognitive development, language development, literacy development, and math development. Trauma is hard to see on the outside, but it truly effects somebody's entire life.
